Dior declares zero tolerance for John Gallianos allegedly racist behaviour
It was a seismic shock for the fashion world when French couture house,Christian Dior, announced on Friday that it had suspended their creative director John Galliano. The move came after the famously flamboyant designer allegedly hurled anti-Semitic and racial abuses at a couple during a drunken brawl at a Paris bar on the previous night. He is reported to have called the lady a Dirty Jew and her companion an Asian bastard. The designer,50,was subsequently arrested by the police.
No clear idea has yet emerged as to what, apart from alcohol, fuelled Gallianos behaviour, although his lawyer maintains that no anti-Jewish statements were made. However,Dior is unambiguous in its stand. Dior affirms with the utmost conviction its policy of zero tolerance towards any anti-semitic or racist words or behaviour. Pending the results of the inquiry,Christian Dior has suspended John Galliano from his responsibilities, said a statement released by Chief executive Sidney Toledano.
Galliano is credited with revolutionising Diors image as a modern label, with his provocative campaigns and designs which have become synonymous with the contemporary face of the brand. Also,Dior is a personal favourite of Bernard Arnault,CEO and Chairman of luxury conglomerate Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessey (LVMH). All the more reason why it is a bold and sensitive move for the brand to suspend Galliano and not only because it is one of the most recognisable luxury labels in countries like India and China. No announcement has yet been made about Diors Fall Winter 2011-2012 pret show scheduled on the 4th of March as part of Paris Fashion Week, the collection for which has been singularly orchestrated by Galliano.
