The main premise of Tina Chandroji’s paintings is that every Indian is connected to his/her own culture and god. In various ways, these beliefs are apparent in daily life. The focus of her work, however,is to show the religious diversity that exists within India, with the country being the primary inspiration for her work. “I am very religious, but I don’t believe in one God,” says the Mumbai-based artist.

“I have researched various beliefs and how shop owners hold on to them. My art is a reflection of my pride for India.” Her paintings will be on display at Tao Art Gallery,Worli, till August 6,for a solo show, titled “Mumbai Landscape”.

Chandroji observes that while bakeries are primarily run by Christians and Parsis, grocery shops are operated by Indians from the western part of the country, vegetable, fruits and flower shops by north Indians, and perfume and butcher shops by Muslims.

Her paintings, consequently, are of establishments such as these —a bakery, vegetable shop and sweetmeats seller, among others — with the common factor being the large images of deities that adorn their walls. These businesses, she believes, have often been handed down over the generations.
