The Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) on Saturday unveiled the new domestic passenger terminal 1C at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (CSIA).
The terminal,built at a cost of Rs 300 crore,is expected to cater to nearly 65 per cent of the domestic traffic of Air India,Jet Airways and Kingfisher Airlines through its six aerobridges. Passengers travelling with these airlines will have to clear the boarding and security check formalities at terminals 1A & 1B.
In essence,the 2,97,194-sq ft new terminal will serve as a security hold area for passengers with over 9,677 sq ft of retail space.
The terminal was inaugurated by Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel and Chief Minister Ashok Chavan. While Patel made a case to the state government to reduce the 28 per cent sales tax on Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) to four per cent in Mumbai and Pune,Chavan told the gathering that the first phase of rehabilitation of slumdwellers on airport land would take place this year.
Terminal 1C will have a dedicated baggage make-up area along with 10 walk-through metal detectors known as door frame metal detectors (DFMD). Airline offices of major carriers are also expected to shift to the new terminal along with the MIAL offices. It will also house a 4,250-sq ft common lounge for airlines.
