(PTI Photo)After recording temperatures below 20 degree Celsius in the past week, the minimum temperatures in Mumbai have clocked a significant spike of 3-4 degrees since Monday. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the city is slated to experience a fall in temperature after December 25.
On Tuesday, minimum temperatures at IMD’s Santa Cruz recording station touched 23.7 degrees, a departure of six degrees above normal. At the Colaba observatory, the minimum temperature was 19.4 degree Celsius, paralleling the season’s lowest temperature so far which was recorded on December 12.
On Monday, the minimum temperatures in Santa Cruz touched 23.6 degrees while the Colaba coastal station registered 24 degree Celsius.
On the rise in mercury levels, Sunil Kamble, director of IMD Mumbai, told The Indian Express, “As per a weather system, there is a cyclonic circulation in the Arabian Sea. While it is far from the city, its impact is resulting in a rise in the temperature,” the officer said.
“After December 25, we are expecting a decrease in the temperature owing to the western disturbances as well as northerlies. However, until then the minimum temperatures will fall between the range of 21-22 degrees,” added Kamble.
Meanwhile, Mahesh Palawat from Skymet Weather Services, attributed the escalation in temperatures to the presence of a trough over North Konkan. “Whenever there is a trough, there is an anti-clockwise wind movement. The inland winds from the south east are coming in and therefore, there has been a rise. The temperature levels will remain higher until the northerlies set in.” Palawat told The Indian Express.
For the record, as per IMD scientists, winter typically sweeps the bay around December 15 after the maximum temperatures start declining. However, last year, citizens found themselves grappling with high temperatures hovering around 35 degrees Celsius even until the last week of December.
On Tuesday, the maximum temperatures in the megapolis’ suburbs as well as island city divisions hovered around 32 degree Celsius, as per IMD figures.
