Team player

This time around,we are a bigger and better team with Kunal Khemu,Ratna Pathak Shah and Mithun Chakraborty as the new additions.

After having played Ajay Devgn’s best buddy and then arch enemy in the two previous editions of Golmaal, what new dimension does your character take in Golmaal 3?

This time around,we are a bigger and better team with Kunal Khemu,Ratna Pathak Shah and Mithun Chakraborty as the new additions. There are two sets of brothers here — Ajay and Shreyas (Talpade) are siblings,as are Tusshar (Kapoor),Kunal and I. Shreyas, who stammers in the film, doesn’t get along with his brother, but both keep trying their luck with new businesses along with best friend Kareena (Kapoor). My brothers and I are conmen. That’s how the story rolls. But at the core of it,we all remain the same stupid boys that we’ve been in the previous Golmaals.

And Kareena plays one of the boys too?

She is a violent,foul-mouthed brat in the film who shoots abuses that can embarrass a street-side romeo. But it was adorable to watch her fumble and hesitate while delivering such dialogues.

Devgn,Tusshar and you have been a part of all the three editions. Have you developed an underlying chemistry?

Tusshar doesn’t have dialogues but Ajay and I are pat on each other’s reactions and have developed a camaraderie that’s unmistakable on screen.

Did that facilitate improvisation?

The first Golmaal was heavy on improvisations — we came up with our own gags and director Rohit Shetty would include them in the script if he thought they worked. But in both Golmaal Returns and Golmaal 3,he gave us a diktat to follow the script and dialogues.

Does this edition leave scope for another sequel?

It’s like the Carry On series. If Rohit keeps coming up with more bizarre plots and new twists to the characters,he can go on and on. People will continue to return to the theatres every time because the characters are funny and the camaraderie is visible.

Despite having been in the industry for long, you continue to play second fiddle. Are you not willing to try out more solo-hero films?

I work better in partnerships. It helps develop a rapport on-screen and adds a fun element. In fact,I would do a solo-hero film only if I’m forced or desperate.

Has critical acclaim for Ishqiya brought you any more exciting roles?

I had hoped it would, but that hasn’t happened, not to my satisfaction. Satish Kaushik has offered me an interesting character and I am reading a few more scripts but there is nothing I can brag about, really. Right now,I feel I have turned into a sequel king with sequels of Golmaal,Dhamaal and Munnabhai coming up and one for Ishqiya being considered.

Circuit is one of the most adored on-screen characters. Are you looking forward to the next part of the franchise?

I’m always happy to work with the team again but honestly,I’d like to move on if I can. I feel I’m paying the price of doing a good job. It’s a Catch-22 situation. If people like your work, they want to see you do it again and if they don’t,you’re out of work anyway.

Will you produce another film after Hum,Tum Aur Ghost failed?

The failure did upset me but didn’t discourage me. I have a few scripts in hand which I will consider after my shooting schedule in Mauritius for Faltu with Jackky Bhagnani is over. I think I’m just stupid, have lost the plot and will go on losing money, but I won’t stop producing films. It’s a process I enjoy and am now addicted.
