Teachers’ union blames education dept for delay in approval of posts

The Mumbai Junior College Teachers’ Union is up in arms against the school education department claiming that approval of hundreds of junior college teachers’ posts is still pending.

The Mumbai Junior College Teachers’ Union (MJCTU) is up in arms against the school education department claiming that approval of hundreds of junior college teachers’ posts is still pending. This comes even after the department conducted a three-month long camp to approve the teachers’ posts across Mumbai,Thane and Raigad districts.

MJCTU has alleged that many employees of the department have been demanding bribe from teachers to approve their posts, thus delaying the process. Anil Deshmukh, general secretary of MJCTU,said,“They have asked for bribes from our teachers to approve their posts. This is going on for a few years now.”

This July, over 300 teachers from junior colleges and members of MJCTU staged a protest at Azad Maidan alleging corruption in the education department. They even met the Education Minister Rajendra Darda to put forth their demands. Following which, the department organised a camp for three months. “Earlier they used to set up camps for only a week. However, following our protest, they extended the camp to three months. Still the approval of hundreds of teachers is pending,” Deshmukh said.

V Pawar,a junior college teacher, said,“When I refused to pay the bribe,my post was not approved. I cannot run after them to get the approval.”

Deshmukh added,“We got to know that in north zone of Mumbai division, teachers of only 12 colleges out of 56 colleges got the approval. We have sought more details of the camp to decide our future course of action.”

However, officials at the deputy director of school education office at Charni Road said they have extended the camp for another month to complete the pending approvals. An assistant director of school education said,“We have extended the camp further. We had conducted the camp to ensure the approvals are done without any hassles. If the teachers still have complaints,we cannot do anything more.”
