Teachers on strike won’t release marks for internal projects

THOUGH Mumbai University managed to conduct degree college exams despite teachers striking work, the latter have now threatened they will not release marks for internal projects. Monday’s announcement by degree college teachers will delay the declaration of results for degree courses.

Putting pressure on the state, which is yet to address their demands including regularisation of teachers and salary increments, teachers affiliated to the Bombay University and College Teachers Union (BUCTU) and their counterparts from SNDT Women’s University have threatened to intensify their stir.

As per the 60:40 or 80: 20 format,60 or 80 per cent marks are kept for theory papers while rest are based on project work. A total of 40,000 teachers across the state have been boycotting exam duty since February 4. Evaluation process starts on the fifth day after the first paper is conducted. The first paper of TYBCom was on March 28.

“The government tried to thwart our protest by having universities conduct exams on schedule. We had requested varsity officials to postpone the exam but they did not support us. It does not mean that we have lost the battle. We will continue our agitation,” said Madhu Paranjape,General Secretary of BUCTU.

BUCTU members said,“The government claims that only 2,500 teachers are to be regularised. This is incorrect. There are 8,000 teachers who need to be regularised. Teachers from other state universities affiliated to MFUCTO will also be adopting a similar stand wherever the semester-based and 60:40 or 80:20 format have been implemented.”

Paranjape said the decision will be conveyed to the university as well as government authorities.

MU officials refused to comment.
