A month after a foreigner fell off a moving train and died, the Dadar railway police have finally traced his identity with the help of the tattoos on his body. After much research and uploading his photographs on the Internet, the police found out that the man was Danish. They are now waiting for the conformation from Danish embassy in New Delhi.

“We had no clue on his identity, expect for the tattoos on his body. Even that did not help much initially,” said a senior police official. It was only when Ranjeet Vichare,a professional working in a public relations firm, came forward to help the cops, the case was cracked. The victim’s right hand had a word ‘Helle’ tattooed on it. The body also had tattoos of Vikings culture. On researching,it was found out that there is a village with the name of Helle in two countries — Denmark and Sweden. With the help of a social networking site, the photos of the foreigner were also linked to the police departments of these two countries.

“I wrote to the Danish,Swedish,Finnish,Norwegian and the German embassies in New Delhi. A few days later, the Danish embassy reverted saying the description matched with one of its national but had to get the confirmation for the same from the authorities in Copenhagen” said Vichare.

When Newsline contacted the Danish embassy,it said the authorities in Denmark were tracing the sister of the deceased and it would take a couple of days. “The embassy confirmed that their national had gone missing in Mumbai, but have not confirmed his identity yet,” said an official.

On December 10 last year,a 45-year-old foreigner fell from the CST-Dombivli train. The man,who did not have any belongings, was rushed to the Lokmanya Tilak General Municipal hospital at Sion, but died on admission. Since there was no clue to trace his identity, the police requested the hospital authorities to preserve his body and even did his DNA sampling. The man had been robbed of his belongings (Rs 22,000 and passport) and had registered a case for the same with the Colaba police on November 23.
