Tasgaon bypoll: NCP fields R R Patil’s wife

The byelection was necessitated following the death of R R Patil in February.

The NCP has decided to field late leader R R Patil’s wife Suman Patil from the Tasgaon (Kavate-Mahankal) assembly constituency in Sangli district, which goes to bypolls this month. The byelection was necessitated following the death of R R Patil in February.

The ruling BJP has decided not to field any candidate against her. “As a tribute to R R Patil, we would like to support the family member who will replace Patil in the assembly constituency,” said state BJP chief Raosaheb Danve. The Congress and the Shiv Sena too have decided not to field any candidate against Suman Patil.

However, the Sena is expecting the same gesture from the NCP, and the Congress too, during the byelections due in Bandra (East). Sena MLA from the seat, Bala Sawant, died recently. While the Sena has not officially declared the candidate yet, the Congress intends to field former minister and senior leader Narayan Rane.

BJP sources said they were not keen to field any candidate from Bandra (East). “They (Sena) did not contest the Mukhed bypoll following our sitting MLA Govind Rathod’s death after the elections. His son Tushar Rathod won the bypoll,” said a leader.
