Kicking off the National Postal Week celebrations this Friday,India Post will display nearly 500 old letters which will give a glimpse into the personal lives of some of our erstwhile political heroes or the unforgettable reel-life heroes. These letters,to be displayed at Ravindra Natya Mandir,Prabhadevi, will throw light into the history of the country and tell us something about the personalities of our past heroes.

Officials at General Post Office,Mumbai, said that the list of people whose letters would be displayed will include personalities from the field of politics, arts, literature, professionals and sports from the pre-Independence and post-Independence era. An attraction is also a few original British India post cards displaying communications between Englishmen and Indian leaders.

“These are not mere letters. Reading them gives an insight into the past glory and flamboyance of a country. It speaks volumes about the flair, personality and style of the writer,” said M S Bali, chief postmaster general of Maharashtra and Goa.

According to Charles Lobo, post master general-mail management,Mumbai GPO,“On Thursday evening, while we were setting up the exhibition,we received two frames from the governor’s collection. Each of these frames has 9-12 letters. They display hand-written communications between former governors and ministers.”

One such letter,Lobo said,is a note by Jawarharlal Nehru discussing his daughter Indira Gandhi and son-in-law Feroze Gandhi.

The rare letters’ exhibition will be a part of the National Postal Week, kicking off on the World Post Day on Friday. The post office has planned several programmes to celebrate the week.
