(File) The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has added 32 waste compactor vehicles to its existing fleet of garbage collection vans in Mumbai.
According to civic officials, the vehicles were procured under “Swachh Mumbai Abhiyan”, a programme conceived by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, aiming to achieve zero waste target in Mumbai.
At present, the city generates 6,200 metric tonnes of solid waste daily. Of the 32 vehicles, six will be operational in the island city, while 11 will be deployed in the western suburbs and 15 in the eastern suburbs.

“The additional vehicles will ensure that garbage disposal issues are addressed promptly and solid waste is collected from open bins more frequently,” said Prashant Tayshetye, chief engineer of Solid Waste Management (SWM) department of the BMC.
In July, the BMC came up with a WhatsApp chatbot for citizens to lodge complaints related to garbage dumping in the city. Till July 31, as many as 5,162 complaints were recorded, of which 5,018 have been addressed, while 139 were not related with solid waste management, officials said.
