Students boycotted OPD services to protest ‘delayed treatment’ given to Dayanand Kale. Express A 22-year-old student of Podar Ayurved Medical College and Hospital in Worli died from injuries he sustained after falling down from a tree while trying to pick mangoes on Wednesday night. Other students of the college claimed that the student, Dayanand Kale, received delayed treatment for his injuries and that cost him his life.
The students boycotted outpatient department (OPD) services and held protests over Kale’s death on Thursday.
On Wednesday night, Kale, a third-year student of Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery, climbed up a tree on the premises to pick mangoes. As per initial reports, he fell down while trying to jump to another tree, sustaining serious injuries on his head and back. He was immediately rushed to the emergency ward of the hospital but doctors couldn’t treat him right then due to the alleged unavailability of essential medical equipment. Kale was then rushed to the civic-run Nair Hospital, where he was declared dead.
The students also alleged that as the hospital didn’t even have an ambulance, they had to rush Kale to Nair Hospital in a taxi, which further delayed his treatment. Enraged by this, the students staged a protest on Thursday morning by closing the OPD. They also demanded an answer from the hospital administration.
However, hospital authorities refuted the allegations. “When Dayanand fell down, he sustained severe brain injury and started bleeding from his nose. We provided first aid treatment and within minutes, shifted him to Nair Hospital. Also, we have all facilities available, and there was no negligence in treating Dayanand,” said a senior officer from the medical college.
Abhijit Patil, a Yuva Sena leader from Worli who joined the protest later, claimed that despite repeated demands to start an ICU unit at the hospital, it hasn’t been set up so far. “Permission was given to station four doctors from JJ hospital at the ICU unit. In fact, the machines were also being purchased but with the change in government, the plan was stalled,” he alleged.
