State Education Board: Manual method scrapped, internal assessment marks to be imparted online

Until now, this process was manual where marks would be written on sheets and submitted to the divisional offices of Maharashtra State Board which would then feed the marks into the system.

Ahead of board exams, the Maharashtra state board has announced changes in the process of submission of marks for practical and internal assessment of students along with their performance in graded subjects. Instead of the traditional system of manually imparting marks on sheets and submitting it to the board, now these marks will have to be submitted online.

The change, teachers said, will reduce errors and delays in declaration of state board exam results. Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education conducts exams for higher secondary certificate (HSC–Class 12) and secondary school certificate (SSC–Class 10). HSC is slated to begin on February 26 this year and SSC will start from March 1.

Until now, this process was manual where marks would be written on sheets and submitted to the divisional offices of Maharashtra State Board which would then feed the marks into the system. With the new process however, this step of board officials having to feed marks into the system has been erased. Instead, teachers or schools would themselves submit the marks online.

An official from the Maharashtra State board explained, “Marks of practical assessment was given in digits and by circling on OMR sheets for graded subjects. Thereon, these sheets were submitted to the respective divisional offices of the board, where the marks would be keyed into the system. From now, marks will be directly recorded online, as transportation of sheets would often be delayed.”

Welcoming the move, senior teacher Jaywant Kulkarni said, “This will likely speed up the process of result declaration.” Adding to this, spokesperson for Maharashtra School Principals’ Association, Mahendra Ganpule, said, “The new system will considerably reduce chances of errors as teachers will be uploading marks into the system directly.”

Even though marks will be uploaded online by teachers or schools, print-outs of the submitted document will still have to be submitted to the board office.
