State cops gun down Savio Club

Former champions Maharashtra State Police (MSP) regained the men’s title while hosts Ghatkopar YMCA won the women’s crown in the 24th Bombay YMCA Annual Open State Level Basketball Tournament at the Ghatkopar YMCA on Wednesday.

M S Police, who started off as favourites and were winners in 2009 when they completed a hat-trick,beat Savio Club from Matunga 73-51. That is after they led 36-24 at half time. The men’s final saw the formidable policemen dominate from the start. Diminutive and lesser fancied, their Savio Club opponents struggled to breach the rock-solid MSP defence that included the gigantic Abid Mulla,Vijay Thosar,Sanjay Salunkhe and Kunal Maria. Efforts from a distance also met with little success as Savio Club missed the basket on numerous occasions. And it was the policemen all the way through.

In contrast, the women’s final was a thriller with Ghatkopar YMCA surviving a second-half scare before snatching an exciting 56-49 win over a never-say-die Agradneya Vyayam Shala. The experienced Ghatkopar YMCA ladies sat pretty with a 35-22 lead at half-time. But AVS came back with a brilliant onslaught in the third and fourth quarters to spice up the contest. At one stage, they even set the scene for a nail-biting finish and threatened to take the match away. Enhanced by Amruta Bhuskute’s shooting prowess,AVS were rewarded for a fierce attack and with just 57 seconds remaining they had narrowed the margin to 48-54.
