A 24-year-old youth, son of a retired assistant police inspector, allegedly committed suicide at his Bhendi Bazaar residence in South Mumbai on Thursday. Police said Pankaj Patil, allegedly depressed over unemployment, had hanged himself while his parents were away.

A J J Marg police officer said they received a call from Patil’s friend after he broke open the door and found the body.

“Patil’s parents had gone to their native place in Nashik. He was alone at home and had been depressed lately as he was unemployed. He earlier worked for a courier company but had quit his job two years ago. On Thursday morning,Patil’s friend Dhanaji went to his house and rang the door bell. When there was no response,he broke open the door and found Patil hanging,” said an officer from the J J Marg police station.

Though Patil was rushed to JJ Hospital,he was declared dead on arrival.

The police have registered an accidental death report (ADR) in the case. Patil’s father was an assistant inspector and attached to the Byculla police station before retiring on January 30 this year.

Senior Inspector Rajesh Dhanawade said,“We believe he was depressed since he was unemployed. Our investigations are on.”
