Railways has decided to provide train reservation facilities at six more post offices in Mumbai.
As per information from the postal department,14 post offices earned more than Rs 80 lakh through reservations on December 15 this year. GPO Fort earned the most,Rs 2,10,000,while Nerul post office earned the lowest at Rs 1000.
The railways, however,is unhappy with the postal department for not advertising the service adequately claiming that post offices do not even have boards informing the public about the facility. Railways does not charge post offices for communication costs (paid by railways to MTNL depending on the distance of post office from CST),hardware equipment and ticket stationery. For GPO,communication charges are Rs 1,400 and for Ulhasnagar post office the cost is Rs 20,500.
The postal department has identified 103 post offices in Mumbai for reservation counters. Around 500 post offices have been identified for the facility in Maharashtra circle. A post office is chosen on the basis of location ,need for reservation facility in the locality and distance from railway station.
