Following repeated non-appearance by the commissioner of Nagpur Municipal Corporation before the State Human Rights Commission in a case over a civic issue, the commission has cracked the whip by issuing a bailable warrant against the NMC Commissioner.
A bailable warrant is an order for arrest that enables a person to be released on bail immediately.
The order issued by Maharashtra SHRC chairperson Justice AM Badar and member Justice Swapna Joshi mentioned that they had taken suo motu complaint regarding violation of human rights of the residents of the North Nagpur due to non-construction of roads and also repeated vehicle accidents due to want of roads.
“The violation of human rights is prima facie established requiring the commission to take cognizance of this news report in 2024. However, even after lapse of a period of one year, the Municipal Commissioner, Nagpur Municipal Corporation has failed to pay heed to the notice, summons and warning to prosecute him issued by my learned predecessor,” the notice said.
“Even on 16.10.2024 a cost of Rs 10,000 was imposed by the then division bench of this Commission as the Municipal Commissioner, Nagpur Municipal Corporation had failed to respond in the instant complaint by putting up stand of the corporation before this Commission,” it said.
“Hence, left with no alternative, this commission is constrained to pass following order…Issue bailable warrant in the sum of Rs 1 against Dr Abhijeet Chaudhary, Municipal Commissioner, Nagpur Municipal Corporation, Nagpur for his appearance before this Commission for adducing evidence in this matter on 24.11.2025..” the order said.
