The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) plan to demolish the historic dean’s bungalow at King Edward Memorial (KEM) Hospital have sparked significant row with over 200 faculty members of the hospital opposing the demolition and even the Shiv Sena (UBT) warning of imminent protests if the structure is touched.

Shiv Sena (UBT) member and former corporator Sachin Devdas Padwal has written to the BMC contesting the decision of the civic body to demolish the dean’s bungalow.

In the letter, he highlighted the building’s immense historical significance. Padwal noted that the bungalow had hosted prominent figures such as Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru, and pointed out that Jivraj Narayan Mehta, the founder of KEM Hospital, was arrested by British police for providing medical assistance to freedom fighters. He emphasized that numerous meetings related to rallies and protests during the Independence movement took place within the building.

“The BMC should explore alternative arrangements rather than demolishing such a historically significant structure that requires only repairs,” Padwal told The Indian Express. “If the decision is not reversed, we will stage a protest with senior leaders and supporters to underscore the importance of preserving such historical landmarks,” said the Sena (UBT) leader.

The BMC plans to demolish the 3,000-square-foot bungalow, which includes a large lawn, 10 rooms, a verandah, parking space, and a dining room, to construct a 20-storey building. This new structure is intended to provide residential facilities for doctors and the dean, accommodating nearly 100 doctors and just a five-minute walk from the hospital.

Hospital staff have suggested that the residential facility could be constructed in another area of the hospital. They pointed out that a similar proposal to create a residential facility at Karmachari Bhavan, a structure close to KEM Hospital, was previously considered but later cancelled. “There are numerous structures in the city that could be redeveloped to make space for medical staff. Why demolish a historical building?” a senior hospital officer said.

The hospital protocol dictates that the dean resides at the Dean’s Bunglow. Dr. Sangeeta Rawat, the dean of KEM Hospital, currently resides there.
