India No.3 Sanil Shetty proved to be at his dazzling best as he quelled a spirited challenge from Dena Bank’s Noel Pinto in an action-packed men’s singles final of the Matunga Gymkhana-All Mumbai ranking table tennis tournament at the Matunga Gymkhana.

The left-hander triumphed 11-9,11-8,6-11,11-13,11-5,12-10 in a battle in which the pendulum swung both ways constantly, and the score-line only gives a fair indication of closeness of the encounter. In fact,Pinto matched Air-India’s star paddler stroke for stroke

right through the tie. With Shetty leading 3-2,it was the sixth game that produced the most enthralling rallies as both combatants produced an array of scintillating strokes, hitting and counter-hitting with aplomb. A blazing forehand drive by Shetty and an edge point that went in his favour, however, snuffed out Pinto’s bid to take the tie to the wire.

More lively action followed in the youth and junior boys’ singles finals with the same two competitors facing each other in both summit clashes. Nishaad Shah,a 10th standard ward from Jamnabai Narsee was relentless while outlasting Ravindra Kotiyan,a ninth standard student from Santacruz’s Sane Guruji Vidyamandir,11-5,11-8,5-11,19-17,8-11,11-8 in the junior boys’s singles final. However, his effort seemed to have taken its toll,as Kotiyan turned the tables on him in the youth boys’ final winning 13-11,11-7,6-11,11-9,14-12.

Shweta Parte,Maharashtra’s top player, meanwhile, hardly had to break a sweat as she swept the women’s and youth girls’ titles rather comfortably. It was left for Dahisar Vidyamandir’s chubby lass Dyuti Patki to win the hearts of the goodly crowd finally as he produced a fine all-round displaying en route to lifting both the sub-junior and junior girls’ titles.
