Soon, a racquet-shaped jetty at Radio Club to decongest Gateway of India
The cost of construction is pegged at approximately Rs 165 crore. Saini said the Radio Club Jetty will be built in the shape of a tennis racquet, and have 10 fingers (docking space) where a total 20 boats can be parked.

The Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB) will soon float tenders for construction of the much-awaited Radio Club Jetty, which is expected to decongest the Gateway of India.
“We have obtained all necessary permission and environmental clearances. Now tenders will be floated for appointing the contractor and we expect the jetty to be ready in 2025,” Amit Saini, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the MMB, told The Indian Express. The proposed project was envisaged 16 years ago but work related to the jetty like the tendering process only started this year.
The cost of construction is pegged at approximately Rs 165 crore. Saini said the Radio Club Jetty will be built in the shape of a tennis racquet, and have 10 fingers (docking space) where a total 20 boats can be parked.
“The upcoming Radio Club Jetty will be spacious and exclusively cater to passenger movement through waterways by accommodating more boats than what can be handled currently at the Gateway of India,” he said.
According to the MMB, once the Radio Club Jetty is built, it will decongest the Gateway of India as passenger movement will happen from there. Moreover, at the Gateway of India, a lot of traditional boat services operate.
In 2022-23 (till Feb 2023) the Gateway of India saw nearly 22.20 lakh passenger traffic, up from 12.23 lakh in the previous year. Many people from Mumbai prefer the Gateway of India as it is easily connected with the nearby suburban railway stations and is one of the popular tourist places where every day lakhs of people and tourists come and take a ferry ride for lesuire. The New Ferry Wharf built by the Mumbai Port Authority at Mazgoan dock handled 4.67 lakh passengers in 2022-23 (till Feb).
At the Radio Club Jetty, the MMB will provide passenger facilities including cafeteria, ticket counters, parking facility, landscaped green area among others. Saini added since it is only to facilitate passengers, it will have no other commercial activity like banquet halls meant for weddings or other events that many a times is seen at such terminals.
