Sena men assault lensmen

A Shiv Sena agitation to demand widening of a 3.4-km stretch of the Aurangabad-Pune highway passing through the Cantonment on Saturday turned violent when some photographers were assaulted by a group of activists.

Cantonment police have arrested two persons.

The incident took place when about 60 Sena activists, led by Aurangabad West MLA Sanjay Shirsath Pandurang, were tonsuring their heads and holding a rasta roko against the delay by Cantonment authorities in taking a decision on the road widening demand pending for around two decades. While Shirsath was organising the mundan andolan (head tonsuring) and rasta roko at Golewadi crossing, the lensmen noticed a group vandalsing an autorickshaw and took a photograph. Activists attacked them. Some photographers who came to their rescue were also assaulted. A lensman,Chandrakant Thote, registered a complaint against eight persons. Police nabbed two on Saturday evening.

Shirsath condemned the incident and said the party workers should not have taken such a step. “Sena cannot support vandalism. No way can vandalism be promoted. It is possible the vandals were not Sena men. It’s now the responsibility of the police to take action.” Sena district chief Ambadas Danve has apologised for the incident.

The matter of widening the road has been pending for two decades now.
