Security boost for resident doctors: Govt plans round-the-clock police outposts in medical colleges

The Medical Education Department is working on a plan to deploy police personnel on-site to ensure round-the-clock security across medical institutions.

This development comes amid Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctor’s  (MARD) repeated demands for stronger security measures in medical colleges as in cases where a patient’s condition deteriorates or treatment outcomes are unfavorable, relatives sometimes react aggressively, leading to verbal abuse and even physical assaults on doctors. Resident doctors have consistently raised concerns about inadequate security, arguing that while the number of medical students and patients has grown, security measures have not been proportionately strengthened.

A senior official from the Medical Education Department confirmed that the government is taking these concerns seriously. “We understand the growing security challenges faced by doctors. Plans are being finalized to deploy police outposts in major medical colleges to ensure their safety. The aim is to have officers present round the clock to prevent any untoward incidents,” the official stated.

Several recent attacks on doctors highlight the urgency of the situation. In November 2024, 27 people assaulted doctors and nurses at VN Desai Hospital in Mumbai after the deaths of a mother and newborn. In August 2024, a female doctor at Sion Hospital was attacked by a patient and his relatives. In May 2024, a resident doctor at Akola Government Medical College was beaten by a mob following a patient’s death.
