School notes: ‘Youphoria 2012’ inter-school contest

Students of Sarvajanik Shikshan Sanstha’s Lokmanya Tilak English High School,Mulund (West),participated in ‘Youphoria 2012’ inter-school competition organised by B S K B Association on September 30 in Vashi,Navi Mumbai.

The students participated in all events — singing,elocution,quiz and creative writing.

Sanika Sameer Khadkikar of Std VIII-C won the first prize in elocution in Mumbai district. She spoke on ‘Technology — Curse or boon’. She has made our school proud,the principal said.

Vivek V Deshpande,chairman of the school,was happy and congratulated Sanika. He said more students should take part in academic and sports activities. He congratulated the staff and parents for efforts to develop children.

New Horizon Public School celebrates joy of giving week

It is said the ‘joy of giving’ is the most for children and this was reaffirmed during a ‘Joy of Giving’ week celebrated at New Horizon Public School,Airoli,from October 1.

‘Charity begins at home’. This saying proved true as students were asked to contribute in household work.

Students from grades I to V read stories to other grades highlighting the attribute of sharing and caring. They also organised cultural activities and performed skits,dances and songs for the bus department and support staff. Students served them snacks too to show they were special and an integral part of the school.

Students of grade V visited Helen Keller Institute,students of grade IV an orphanage and students of grade III a municipal school and distributed stationery,biscuits,snacks and cereals among the underprivileged .

“After the visits,students understood the importance of parents in their lives,” said Headmistress Monalisa Basu .

“The week was celebrated as part of life skill education being imparted by the school,” said Principal Bulbul Sengupta.

Aptitude test at Lokmanya Tilak English High School

Lokmanya Tilak English High School,Mulund (West),conducted an aptitude test for students of Std X.

The test was conducted by Shailaja Mulay,retired headmistress of St Michael’s High School,Mahim. She is a professional counsellor and has achieved expertise in the field of career guidance.

Vivek V Deshpande,chairman,and Saili Dalvi,headmistress of Lokmanya Tilak English High School,motivated students to take the test that could help them select the right career.

In a one-on-one interactive session after the test,the counsellor gave parents clear idea of capabilities,potential and interests of their wards.

What a weigh!!! Fun with mathematics

Class III students of Arunoday Public School had an incredible experience learning mathematics. The teachers called a local sabjiwala and explained the students the concept of weights. The vendor showed the students how to weigh vegetables.

The children were very excited. Observing keenly,they understood when there is weight in a pan,it goes down.

One student said: “Teacher,next time,I will observe the pans carefully.”

Another joined,“I will teach mummy.”

The teachers weighed pencil boxes,  textbooks,etc,and made students think laterally.

Maharashtra State Jr Athletic Championship 2012-13

‘Winning isn’t everything but the will to win is everything’ has been the approach of Lawrentians.

Students of St Lawrence High School participated with enthusiasm in Maharashtra State Junior Athletic Championship 2012-13 held in Nanded on October 2 and 3. Anil Sahoo,one of the best athletes of Mumbai,secured 1st place in both long and high jumps in U-16 boys category.

It was ‘Sahoo Jadoo’ again that ensured the team got selected for the nationals in Lucknow from October 27.

Pallavi Kulkarni won gold in shot put and Sweta Thakur silver in long jump. Jay Shah and Sarika Volla bagged bronze in U-16 long and high jumps.

Sahoo,Kulkarni and Thakur qualified for nationals. It’s a proud moment for the school,said athletics coach D’Cruz.

Tree plantation by Laxmibai School,Mulund (East)

To create awareness among tiny tots,shishuvihar of Laxmibai English-Medium School Mulund (East) organised a tree plantation event on September 10. The children planted samplings of tulsi,aloe vera and various flowering plants in the vicinity of the school. The children pledge to adopt the samplings until they grow strong and big. Songs were sung and sweets distributed to celebrate the day. The children understood the importance of trees in our lives. Kudos!
