Sangli drug bust: Accused got training to make mephedrone, say police

The Mumbai crime branch on Monday had busted a drug factory in Sangli district and seized 122 kg of high quality mephedrone, cash, gold ornaments, Skoda car, totalling worth Rs 253 crore.

THE MUMBAI police Wednesday said that the main accused involved in the mephedrone factory they busted in Sangli had undergone training in making mephedrone in Varanasi.

The accused, Praveen alias Nagesh Shinde (34), had met a person — a handler for another main accused who is on the run — when he was behind bars who told him they could train him in making mephedrone in exchange for cut in the profits.

A total of six persons were arrested in the case.

Speaking to mediapersons, DCP Datta Nalawade said that the main accused Shinde had undergone training in making mephedrone following which he set up a factory in the interiors of Sangli where mephedrone was being cooked.

After cooking mephedrone with the help of other accused, they would hand it over to another gang which then supplied it to various places like Mumbai, police said.

Crime branch unit VII inspector Mahesh Tawde said Shinde has four cases registered against him in the past although they were not linked to narcotics.

“Our team was working on this case for six months. Sub Inspectors Swapnil Kale and Ramdas Kadam especially worked hard in the past three months to locate the factory,” the officer said.
