Thirty three-year-old Bejoy Nambiar doesn’t watch television at all. The one-film-old director would rather download international TV content on his laptop. Ironically, this whole month hes busy with TV,preparing to make his debut with a 13-episode fiction show on MTV.
Titled MTV Rush, the show is set in the backdrop of a college festival. I made Shaitan because thats the kind of film I wanted to watch; and I am making Rush because thats the kind of TV show Id be interested in viewing, says the director, who is in the middle of hectic shoot in a Navi Mumbai college.
Initially written as a feature film,Rush narrates the story of 12 young characters and how their lives are interlinked. Every episode is a short story in itself, says Nambiar. Set to go on air on July 7,the show deals with various issues that young college students deal with: from drug abuse to exploring sexuality to romantic link-ups.
I am not trying to preach anything at all. I am attempting to show what youth really is about. For instance, one episode is about young love but its not your typical teenybopper story that you see on TV. This,I think,is the USP of the show, he says.
Mumbais theatre circuit has found space on the show, with most of its actors coming from a theatre background. I have watched most of them on stage Adir Bhatt,Faisal Qureshi and Natasha Sehgal, who has co-written the script of my second film David with me,and well-known playwright Pawan Uttam, informs Nambiar.
Another concept that sets Rush apart is the fact that Nambiar is directing only three episodes and has picked a quirky mix of directors to work on the rest. I was a bit apprehensive handing over the script to others but I am extremely pleased now. These are ad film and feature film directors and they have all added a bit of themselves to the episodes, adds Nambiar.
If music was one of the high points of his 2011-hit Shaitan,Nambiar will definitely score points for Rush also. Indie bands Bhayanak Maut (who gave music to Shaitan),Shair n Func,Demonic Resurrection,Modern Mafia (who are giving music to David) and Shruti Hassan,Anirudh (of Kolaveri di fame) and Rajnigandha are part of the show. College festivals do see performances by indie bands,so they just had to be in the show. This will take the show up by a notch, says Nambiar.
