The State Road Transport Department (RTO) has imposed fines totaling Rs. 2.4 lakh on 24 buses for alleged illegal transportation of goods and overloading on buses from Mumbai to Konkan during Ganeshotsav.
The department has targeted 24 buses following inspections conducted at key locations such as Dadar, Kurla, Chembur, and Panvel.
The Mumbai Central RTO initiated a crackdown from September 1, focusing on private buses heading to Konkan for the festival. The crackdown, which aims to ensure compliance with motor vehicle laws, will continue until September 30.
Last year, a similar campaign led to penalties amounting to Rs 2.8 lakh for violations involving 28 vehicles.
According to a senior transport officer, the department conducts these inspections during festive seasons to address various violations.
These include excessive fares, illegal transport of goods, overcapacity in passenger buses, driving without a valid license or in breach of license conditions, lack of a stage roadworthiness certificate, malfunctioning reflectors, indicators, tail lights, and wipers, unauthorised modifications to the vehicle, non-payment of motor vehicle tax and non-functional fire-fighting equipment.
