Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB) CEO Manik Gurusal recently announced that RoRo (Roll-on/Roll-off) boat services will start on a pilot basis between Vasai and Bhayander from February 20.

Gurusal claimed they have tweaked the original route plan (increasing it from 0.8 nautical miles to 2 nautical miles), leading to a resultant rise in travel time from 10 minutes to 20-25 minutes.

“Due to drafting issues, the route has been changed. However, only after testing the services during low tide and high tide, more services can be added…” he further said.

As per the MMB, eight round trips will be available in a day. The services from Vasai will be operational from 6:45 am to 6:45 pm. Similarly, the services from Bhayander will be operational between 7:30 am and 7:30 pm.

Each RoRo boat can accommodate 100 passengers and 33 vehicles in one trip. The fare for carrying a motorbike is Rs 60, whereas the fare for an autorickshaw without passengers is Rs 100, and for four-wheelers with a driver is Rs 180. The fare for every passenger between three and 12 years has been fixed at Rs 15, and those above 12 years will have to pay Rs 30.

The RoRo service will be run by Suvaranadurg Shipping and Marine Services Private Limited. RoRo services are already operational between Ferry Wharf Domestic Cruise Terminal and Mandwa.

The objective of introducing the RoRo service is to reduce traffic, said officials. At present, commuters have to travel via roadways if they wish to travel between Vasai and Bhayander – which takes anywhere between one and one-and-a-half hours depending on traffic.
