Almost 10 years after the Western Railway (WR) extended the length of platforms for accommodating 12-coach trains,it is now planning to construct the roof (cover shade) over the extended platforms.
Built in 1930,Churchgate station has four platforms two for slow trains and two for fast where suburban trains either terminate or start. Subsequently when WR introduced 12-coach trains,it increased the length of platforms. The platform extension was completed around 10 years ago. But the extended portions did not have roof over them. The existing roof (cover shade) can only cover 9-coach trains.
There was no roof over three additional coaches (towards the north). Commuters face problems especially during monsoon and summer. I too have observed during my travel from Churchgate to Bandra that absence of roof poses problem for commuters, said Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation (MRVC) Managing Director Pramod Chander Sehgal. The length of the platform is 270 metres, but the roof covering the platforms is only 245 metres, he added.
The project took shape after a fund of Rs 10 crore was sanctioned for it. We had some money left from one of our projects. And this was diverted for the extension of the roof, Sehgal said.
The planning to extend the cover shade (roof) is on. Once we finalise the designs,we will commence the work, said WR chief spokesperson Shyam Sunder Gupta.
