The Vakola police investigating Wednesdays road rage in which a man was injured after he was hit with a baseball bat, said on Friday that the accused,Indrajit Sawant (35),had been booked under relevant sections of the Motor Vehicles Act for drink-driving after reports revealed he tested positive for alcohol.
The police will re-record Sawants statement as he was allegedly inebriated when his statement was initially recorded after the incident, and since he had denied hitting anyone at the time.
The Vakola police said,Sawant, the vice president of a leading engineering firm, was in inebriated when he allegedly assaulted Hrishi Gandhi and Sanjay Jaiswal in a fit of rage.
The police said that around 6.40 pm Wednesday,Jaiswal was walking along CST Road in the Kalina area of Santacruz (East) when he saw two men involved in a heated argument. Jaiswal allegedly saw Sawant assaulting Gandhi after their vehicles had brushed each other.
When Jaiswal intervened and tried to convince Sawant not to assault Gandhi, the accused allegedly took out a baseball bat from his car and hit Jaiswal on the head.
Jaiswal, who suffered major injuries, was admitted to Lilavati Hospital in Bandra (West),while Gandhi suffered minor injuries.
We have booked Sawant for drink driving under Section 185 of the Motor Vehicles Act after his medical reports confirmed that he was under the influence of alcohol, senior police inspector,Rajendra Pardesi said.
When Sawants car was checked, police allegedly found bottles of rum and whisky. The police said Sawant, who has been remanded in police custody till June 12,has denied having assaulted the victim during custodial interrogation. Sawant claims that he did not beat up anyone. However,we have evidence substantiating our case, said Pardesi.
Police said they were in the process of recording statements of witnesses who were present at the time of the incident.
Police are also recording statements of the doctors who treated the victims.
