Rights panel seeks reply on Laxmis allegations

The Maharashtra State Human Rights Commission has suo motu taken up transgender activist Laxmi Narayan Tripathis case. Tripathi had alleged that the Bombay Gymkhana management asked her to leave a party at the place last week.

SHRC on Wednesday sought a reply on the allegations. We dispatched a summons to the Gymkhana after SHRC member Subhash Lala took up the case suo-moto. We have asked the management to reply on why she was asked to leave the party and their explanation for what the commission considers as human rights violation, said SHRC registrar Neena Khaparde.

Clearly what happened with me was a case of discrimination on the basis of my sexuality. Bombay Gymkhana will have to pay for it. The Constitution of India clearly states that bias on grounds of gender is forbidden. They cannot get away with this sort of unconstitutional behaviour against an Indian citizen, said Tripathi.

Tripathi had been invited to the party organised by Parmesh Shahani,author of the book Gay Bombay: Globalization,Love and (Be)Longing in Contemporary India. I wasnt told the reason as for why I was asked to leave the party. I now want to know why I was humiliated, added Tripathi. The Gymkhana has been asked to reply to the notice within 30 days.
