Slum dwellers in Dharavi will get houses of 350 square feet each from the redevelopment project, according to a spokesperson of the Dharavi Redevelopment Project Private Limited (DRPPL), a Special Purpose Vehicle led by Adani Realty and the Maharashtra government.

In an official statement on Monday, the spokesperson claimed that that the minimum area that will be offered to the slum dwellers of Dharavi is 17 per cent more or highest among any other slum redevelopment projects in Mumbai. As mandated by the government earlier, houses to be offered were of 269 sqft each. From 2018, the state government increased the area between 315 sqft to 322 sqft in line with the area offered under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojna (PMAY) houses meant for urban poor.

According to the DRPPL spokesperson, “The new flats will be a dream home for all and will upgrade their living conditions.”

Under the project, ineligible slum dwellers also will get houses under the rental housing scheme which is proposed to come up in the salt pan land in Wadala. As per the DRPPL, Navi (New) Dharavi is planned considering the large requirement of dwelling units for the ineligible beneficiaries.

Spread over 2.8 square kilometres, the slum is home to an informal leather and pottery industry that employs over one lakh people. It would be transformed into a cluster of high-rises with improved urban infrastructure to resettle 68,000 people, including slum dwellers and those with commercial establishments.

In November 2022, Adani Realty quoted Rs 5,069 crore for the project in the bidding process and bagged it.
