Ramabai firing: residents to stage protest on June 16

Residents of Ramabai Nagar in Ghatkopar (East),where SRPF men opened fire at a mob of protesting Dalits in 1997,will stage a protest march from Dadar to Vidhan Bhavan on June 16.

Under the aegis of the Ramabai Ambedkar Nagar Hatyakaand Virodhi Sangharash Samiti,residents are scheduled to march from the Dadar Chaityabhoomi to Vidhan Bhavan,to demand that the charges made against their members,in a case filed by the government,be withdrawn and the real culprits be arrested.

Speaking at a press conference Shyam Gaikwad of the organisation said,The investigations in the Ramabai Nagar case have not been performed well by the Mumbai police and we want the case to be handed over to the CBI. They also demanded a separate judicial body for Dalits to deal with cases relating to atrocities against them. Gaikwad added,The rate of crime against the Dalits in Maharashtra has been on the rise since the past few months and most of the cases are pending in courts.
