In a surprise raid on the ticketing office at Dadar railway station on Sunday morning, the Vigilance Department of Central Railway sealed the locker room provided to Travelling Ticket Examiners (TTEs) after complaints of malpractice.
According to the vigilance officials, the raid was conducted following complaints about TTEs charging money from commuters instead of fining them for traveling without tickets. The vigilance department had also received information that the lockers provided to TTEs were being used to store the money taken from commuters.
A register contains details of the TTE to whom the locker has been assigned besides the locker number. Also, details of the items stored in the lockers are maintained. However, when we went through the register,we found that around 30 to 40 lockers were in fake names, said an officer with the vigilance department requesting anonymity.
The officer added that for breaking open the lockers, presence of the chief ticketing inspector (CTI) is required. However, since the CTI was not present, and when contacted said that he was unwell and could not come to work, the officials sealed the locker.
Sealing every locker would have been a cumbersome process and being a Sunday,we were short staffed. So we sealed the locker room for a day. Further procedure will be conducted on Monday, the officer said.
