THE MUMBAI Police crime branch Sunday arrested a 34-year-old IT company employee in Pune for allegedly issuing a death threat to NCP leader Sharad Pawar on social media. The accused Sagar Barve had put up the threat under another name on Facebook.
A senior officer said that Barve was arrested from Pune and produced before a court in Mumbai that remanded him to police custody till Tuesday.
An officer said that prime facie it does not appear that Barve is linked to any party. The officer said so far it is not clear why he posted the message.
In a Facebook post, under the name of Narmadabai Patwardhan, the accused had said that Pawar would meet the fate of Narendra Dabholkar, who was shot dead in Pune in 2013.
Pawar’s daughter and NCP working president Supriya Sule met Mumbai Police Commissioner Vivek Phansalkar, following which an FIR was registered at LT Marg police station and the probe was handed over to the crime branch.
In addition to the Facebook post, there was a Twitter post as well that the NCP produced before the Commissioner. A senior officer, however, said that in that post no one was specifically named.
“We will interrogate the person, based on which further action will be decided,” the officer added.
