While Mumbai University (MU) has already laid the foundation stone of its new sub-centre at Kalyan, its sub-centre in Ratnagiri is functioning without proper administrative facilities and even permanent staff.

The university senate members have now written to the Governor of Maharashtra and vice-chancellor to resolve the matter at the earliest. “I visited the Ratnagiri sub-centre last week and met the staff members there. That’s when I got to know that there are no proper facilities there. There is no staff for laboratories. Students have to manage the lab on their own. I was shocked to know that there is not a single permanent faculty member on the campus,” said Pradeep Sawant,MU senate member.

Officials at the Ratnagiri campus said hundreds of students who passed out before 2009-2010 have not yet received their marksheets and convocation certificates.

On Thursday,Sawant met the in-charge registrar and officer on special duty M S Kurhade to discuss the issue. Sawant and a few other senate members are also planning to meet the governor, who is also MU chancellor.

“The sub-centre was started to help students from Konkan region, who had to go all the way to the Mumbai campus. The issue should be addressed at the earliest as the students are suffering. We have taken up the issue with MU officials also,” said Sawant.

Started on September 5,1989,Ratnagiri sub-centre operated from a B.Ed college. In February 2005,MU acquired 13 acres at Mirjole in Ratnagiri to set a up a full-fledged campus.

However, since then only one administrative building has been built there. Sitaram Joshi,MU assistant registrar at Ratnagiri campus, said: “There is only one administrative building, which is also used to conduct classes. Not a single faculty member or non-teaching staff is permanent,so the quality of their work is poor. There is no authority to take on-the-spot decisions, for everything we have to inform the authorities in Mumbai and the process takes at least 15-20 days.”

Kurhade said,“The senate members had approached us. We will first discuss the matter with the staff there, following which we will prepare a report.”
