The Congress on Monday questioned if Prime Minister Narendra Modi has taken any steps to address the water shortage in Satara and Solapur, where the PM will be holding rallies on Monday.

The party also accused the BJP of taking money under the electoral bond scheme from a company, which was given the contract of a power project in Solapur.

“What has the PM done to alleviate water scarcity in Satara and Solapur? Was the Rs 1,750-crore Solapur Transmission Line project handed over to a private company in exchange for electoral bonds? Why are the Pune-Satara and Satara-Pandharpur highways falling apart within 2-3 years of inauguration?” asked Jairam Ramesh, general secretary in-charge, communications of Congress.

Modi will be addressing six rallies in two days in Maharashtra.

On Monday, the PM will hold rallies at Solapur, Satara and Pune.

Ramesh alleged that in February 2024, the 1,500 MW Solapur Transmission Line project contract was given to a “particular private company”, by government-owned PFC Consulting.

“The revenue from this project is Rs 50 crore per year for 35 years, totalling to Rs 1,750 crore. However, the company that got this lucrative contract had donated electoral bonds to the BJP in large amounts. In January 2024, just one month before winning the contract, it donated Rs 50 crore to the BJP. Is this part of the Prime Minister’s ‘chanda do, dhandha lo’ scheme?” Ramesh wrote on X, without naming the company.

The Congress leader, in his tweet, also raised the issue of scarcity of drinking water in Satara, Sangli, and Solapur. “Between March and April, the requirement of tankers has increased by 13% in Sangli, 31% in Satara, and 84% in Solapur,” he said.

Ramesh pointed out that in 2014 and in 2019, the Lok Sabha candidates of BJP from Solapur had promised to address the city’s water woes if elected but locals say that they were hardly seen in Solapur after their victory.

He also alleged that the Pune-Satara and Satara-Pandharpur highways are falling apart just two to three years after being inaugurated as instead of using gravel, the contractor used cheap stones and black soil to strengthen the road.

“Why has the BJP been silent on this issue, which has led to many avoidable traffic collisions? Is this yet another project under the PM’s favourite ‘chanda dod dhanda lo scheme’?” he asked.
