The terror attack that killed 26 people at Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam will not go unpunished, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said on Wednesday, adding that Prime Minister Narendra Modi would track down the mastermind and “retaliate with extreme steps”.
Detailing the state government’s plans to bring back all the tourists who are stranded in Jammu and Kashmir following the attack, Fadnavis addressed the media in Mumbai and said, “We are continuously monitoring the developments with the J-K government.”
Six tourists from Maharashtra were among the 26 killed in Pahalgam on Tuesday. Fadnavis said that their families will be given a compensation of Rs 5 lakh each. The government, he added, will also get the injured tourists back after getting consent from their doctors.
“The terrorists asked individuals their names and religion before gunning them down. It is a barbaric act which needs strong condemnation. Such a despicable act of terrorism will not go unpunished. Modi will give a befitting reply at an appropriate time,” Fadnavis said.
Earlier, in a social media post on X, Fadnavis said that state Cabinet minister Girish Mahajan has left for Srinagar to coordinate with local authorities there. He also revealed the plans to bring the mortal remains of the six victims to Maharashtra and said arrangements are being made to bring back stranded tourists from Jammu and Kashmir.
Fadnavis said that the Maharashtra government had assigned senior Cabinet ministers, Mangal Prabhat Lodha and Ashish Shelar, to coordinate operations at the Mumbai airport. Minister of State for Urban Development Madhuri Misal will oversee coordination at the Pune airport, he said in the post.
