Plagued with exam goof-ups,universty to review cases

Officials say errors were minor but being made into a big issue.

Officials of Mumbai University on Sunday said they would review the errors in degree and post-graduate college examinations over the next three days. The move comes after a series of examination-related goof-ups in the last week.

The alleged blunders started on with the TYBA French paper, which was five marks short of 100. This was followed by five other instances.

Acting Controller of Examination (CoE) of Mumbai university Deepak Wasave said,“Varsity conducts hundreds of exams, such minor mistakes are likely to occur. However, people only highlight goof-ups and errors.”

“There were certain minor errors but those were rectified at the earliest. These were minor errors, but were highlighted as major goof-ups,scaring students and affecting the morale of those who set the papers. We have decided to review these cases. We will also seek explanation from people directly responsible for these errors. We need to hear their as well,” he added.

The latest error was reported on May 3,when several distance education students and repeaters of MA Marathi-Part II,who had signed up for examinations under the old syllabus, were allegedly given a question paper based on the new curriculum.

On April 29,more than 10,000 students of BCom (Accounts & Finance) found several errors in a question paper. Though the errors were corrected in around 45 minutes by supervisors, students remained a worried lot.

On April 23,first year Master of Science (MSc) students were given Environment Science Paper IV,which was slated for April 30,instead of paper I. On April 26,second-year LLB students were handed over question papers in which the total marks added up to 108 instead of 100.

The apparent errors are, however, not new to the Mumbai University and its students. Last year, too, the examination season witnessed a number of bloopers, including a delay in issuing hall tickets, examination centres being changed at the last minute and paper leaks.
