A water pipeline burst just outside Mantralaya,Nariman Point,on Wednesday causing traffic snarls on the busy Madam Cama Road leading to the Vidhan Bhavan Complex.

The water pipeline connected to a 48-inch Kalbadevi outlet pipe coming from the Malabar Hills reservoir got dismantled at the point of connection of both the pipes. Since the pipeline was buried underground, the civic body employees had to excavate a portion of the road by removing paver blocks to repair the pipeline.

An engineer of the BMC said since the valve in the pipe was close to the point of rupture, they managed to stop the supply by closing the valve.

“Very less amount of water was wasted as the rupture didn’t happen during the supply hours. We will have to carry out welding to connect the pipes. The repair work will be over by Wednesday night,” said the official.

Meanwhile, the Swabhimaan Sanghatana, headed by Nitesh Rane claimed that a leakage in a pipeline at Gautam Nagar,Andheri (east) had not been attended by the BMC for the past one year. “The amount of water lost a day owing to leakage in the city is equivalent to water that can fill 25 water tankers a day. Despite repeated complaints, the BMC has failed to repair water famaged piplines,” said Nitesh Rane.

However, the BMC maintained that the leakage was minor. “It is only a rumour that the pipeline has been leaking for a year. We will repair it soon,” said an official of the hydraulic engineering department.
