The Malwani police have arrested a 37-year-old call centre employee from Kolkata and brought her to the city on Friday,for allegedly stealing ornaments and cash worth Rs 11 lakh from a senior citizen’s house where she stayed as a paying guest.
The woman,identified as Purnima Ghosh,was working at the 3G call centre in Malad and had been staying at the Malwani residence of Pushpa Roy (78) for the past five months. Ghosh had been introduced to Roy through a friend at work who had earlier been Roy’s paying guest at her house in Surbhi Society,Jankalyan Nagar.
According to the police,Roy,who stays alone,had forged a friendship with Ghosh.
The arrested accused knew that Roy kept the keys to her locker below her pillow. On October 10,when Roy was asleep,Ghosh allegedly opened the locker and robbed ornaments,cash and clothes worth Rs 11 lakh. Ghosh then kept the keys back and fled to Kolkata.
When she opened the locker after a day,Roy found her ornaments missing and approached the Malwani police.
Ghosh’s mobile phone was switched off,but we had her address in Kolkata. The police team reached Dum Dum area there and arrested Ghosh. We have recovered Rs 8.30 lakh from Ghosh so far from her house,” said senior police inspector Abdul Rauf Shaikh.
We are now finding out whether she has robbed others too. She has an accent which we are having difficulty understanding. However,interrogation is on, added Shaikh.
