The city’s popular St Xavier’s school from Dhobitalo in Fort is under the spotlight over fund-raising for the music festival to be held in school in December this year. The school has asked each student to contribute Rs 6,500. Even as the letter issued by the school states that the contribution is voluntary, a few parents have alleged that it is mandatory, and in case of non-payment, students are being questioned by the school.

The issue came to light after a few parents took to social media, complaining about the huge amount demanded by the school as contribution for the school’s music festival. “The school is demanding Rs 6,500 per student from nursery to Class V. They are forcing parents, but everyone cannot afford to pay this amount,” said one parent, who wished to remain anonymous for fear of consequences.

The letter issued to parents dated October 6 states, “Our grand musical event to be held on Thursday, December 7, 2023, comes with its fair share of challenges, and that’s where we need your generous contribution and support. In order to cover the cost of all major expenses of the Musical, a request for a voluntary contribution of Rs 6500 or more, per student, would be greatly appreciated.”

“Parents having more than one child will end up paying a large amount,” said another unhappy parent.

The school administration, however, has refuted allegations. Principal of the school Fr Jude Fernandes SJ said, “The primary school PTA had several meetings regarding the student musical event. Subsequently, PTA representatives met all parents of primary school students informing them of the event and requesting their support. The PTA decided to first raise funds from parents, so a request letter was sent to them. Given the current unexpected response to the letter, the primary PTA will now meet and decide the way forward.”
