Cracking down on violators for not adhering to pollution mitigation norms, the Mumbai traffic authorities slapped fined on 1,013 vehicles for allegedly carrying construction material without covering them properly in the past three days, officials said Thursday.

Earlier this week, the city traffic police issued a directive to its lower ranks, instructing them to take strict action against these vehicles and also against those who do not have fitness certificates. It was also instructed to slap fine on those who do not have updated pollution under control (PUC) certificates.

According to the data provided by the Mumbai traffic police authorities, action was taken against 2,460 motorists for not having a valid PUC. These violators were fined and allowed to go, said an official.

“Construction material, including ready mix concrete, are being carried in trucks and mixers without covering at all or not covering properly. Such negligence adds to air pollution while in some instances it also causes accidents. Hence, action was taken against such vehicles,” said an officer.

The officials added that action was also taken against 59 commercial vehicles whose fitness limit of eight years had expired. A directive said that vehicles that do not have fitness certificates should be impounded and sent to the regional transport office concerned for further action.

Another 449 motorists were fined under section 194 (F) of the Motor Vehicle Act for modifying their vehicle’s silencers.

“We have seized over 195 silencers, which were modified… These silencers add to the air pollution and also noise ,” said an officer.
