A man was killed after a fogging machine exploded in Jogeshwari. Thirty five-year-old contract labourer Sandeep Lokhande was charred and declared dead at Cooper Hospital in Bandekarwadi,Jogeshwari. Lokhande was operating the machine when it heated up and exploded.

Executive health officer,Dr Jairaj Thanekar, said the machine has been confiscated by the police. “They are investigating the cause of the explosion,” he said.

Insecticide officer,Deepak Adsul, said the usage of the machines has been stopped for now. “We do not know what caused this explosion and we are helping the police in investigations. At present, the work of the remaining seven machines has been stopped,” he said.

Although fogging is not carried during monsoon,Adsul said that during the dry period fogging was conducted. “Moreover,vehicle-mounted machines are protected from rain as they are covered and safe inside the vehicles. We were carrying fogging operations in Jogeshwari area and also other parts of the city.”

To control the malaria menace in Mumbai, the civic administration purchased 175 hand-held fogging machines and eight vehicle-mounted machines from Germany to be operated in the city for five years.

Corporators had been complaining about the inadequate number of fogging machines in the city which resulted in an increase in malaria cases. The civic administration proposed purchasing imported German-made machines which would be used in each of the seven zones of the city. Corporators opposed the purchase as the machines were expensive compared to Indian-made machines.

Eighty three cases of malaria have been reported in they city so far with patients admitted in 24 civic hospitals.
