A lapse in security at the Inorbit Mall in Malad was brought to light on Monday when a 35-year-old woman managed to enter the mall with a pistol in her handbag. Sent by the local police to check the security measures at the mall, the womans unrestricted entry exposed major security gaps that will now be taken up with the mall administration.
According to the Bangur Nagar police, the woman was a part of their operation to check security measures at the mall. The woman passed the metal detectors, got her handbag checked, but still managed to enter the mall with the pistol in her bag.
Sources at the police station said this was a drill to check the alertness of the security guards at the mall. Since Inorbit is the biggest mall in our jurisdiction and also the most crowded,we cannot take any chances with the security there, a police official said. Another officer on the condition of anonymity said,We had received several complaints regarding the mall security,so we decided to check it. Two policemen in casual clothes were following the woman to save her from the trouble in case she was caught with the pistol.
Ramesh Kadam, senior inspector of Bangur Nagar police station, said,We conducted a security check on Monday and do so regularly. Whenever we find lapses in the security,we inform the mall authorities and seek explanation from them.
