On being scolded by teacher, std VI student jumps to death in school
Several students of his class saw him jump and later told this to the police.
The Khandeshwar police in Navi Mumbai on Tuesday arrested a New Panvel school teacher, charging her with abetment to suicide of a Class VI student, who allegedly jumped out of the window of his fourth floor classroom after he was scolded and slapped by her.
“Gaurav Kank (12), a resident of the Khanda Colony area in Navi Mumbai, was a student of New Horizon School in Sector 13, Navi Mumbai. Around 10.30 am on Tuesday, Gaurav allegedly jumped off the parapet outside the window of his classroom. He was rushed to Ashtavinayak Hospital in Panvel where he was treated but was declared dead an hour later. The Khandeshwar police were subsequently informed about the incident and a team was sent to the school to conduct inquiries,” the police said.
“Preliminary inquiries revealed that Gaurav replied rudely to a question asked by his science teacher, Saumya Manoharan. His reply cast aspersions on her personal life which disturbed Manoharan and she slapped him, following which she went out of the class and started crying. She then took Gaurav to his class teacher where he was given a dressing down,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police Sanjay Yenpure, Zone II, Navi Mumbai.
Yenpure added that after the incident, Gaurav came back to his classroom and shortly, recess was announced. Gaurav then reportedly went to the window of the classroom, which is partially grilled, climbed over the grill onto the parapet and jumped off. Several students of his class saw him jump and later told this to the police.
“After completing initial inquiries, we registered a case against Manoharan, charging her with causing death due to negligence and abetment to suicide under the Indian Penal Code. Manoharan was placed under arrest late on Tuesday night and will be produced in court on Wednesday,” Yenpure said.
Gaurav used to stay in Khanda colony with his parents, who ran a small electrical appliances store in the area.
Despite repeated attempts, school principal Renuka Balaji was unavailable for comments.
