According to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) disaster cell, the blaze erupted in an apartment on the eleventh floor of the residential building around 11.20pm on Monday.
“Though the fire was confined to the electrical duct, the appliances and household items such as wooden furnitures and clothes intensified the flames. As a result, a thick layer of smoke got trapped in the corridor, due to which people who were stuck upstairs suffocated,” said an official.
