Nooriya Haveliwala,27,arrested for drunken driving, has taken to reading the Qur’an and books from the prison library, been attending prison functions including an Art of Living course, but stayed generally aloof,Byculla jail sources said.

Imprisoned with two others in the general barrack, she seems to have overcome her initial fears about being together with hardened criminals, prison sources said, adding she no longer weeps as she used to.

Back from J J Hospital, where she had been admitted, she attended a recent, basic Art of Living course, mandatory for prisoners, but did not play an active role. She also attended Women’s Day functions held at the prison without participating actively, the sources said. Superintendent of Prisons Sudhir Kingre confirmed Haveliwala had attended the course and other prison functions but did not comment further.
