No slowdown effect,TISS expects 10-20% increase in packages

Despite an unstable market scenario, the average salary from offers in the social sector is likely to go up by 10-20 per cent over last year at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS),said experts, even as campus placements begin on Saturday.

“Our cell coordinates the placements of students from the School of Social Work and School of Rural Development. Each year, the average salary goes up by 20 per cent and this year we expect the same. The placement scenario looks good,” said Prof Swapan Garain, coordinator,Career Guidance & Placement Cell,TISS.

He said the economic turmoil would not have any impact on the offers from the social sector as the fund flow to this sector has increased significantly over the years. “For example, while funds allocated for a particular central government scheme on application of science and technology in society in the last five-year-plan were Rs 6 crore, the money allocation for the same scheme may increase to around Rs 40 crore in the next five-year-plan. This signifies the tremendous importance attached to this sector now. Also, the centre has made it compulsory for public sector companies to invest two per cent of their post-tax profit for corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities, which is a good amount,” he said.

Around 200 students from the School of Social Work and School of Rural Development will participate in the placement process from January 14-22. The prospective recruiters include NGOs,corporate foundations, funding agencies, government organisations,CSR divisions of industry,Chambers of Commerce and academic institutions.
