The IMD, in its five-day forecast, had also issued a yellow alert for Mumbai, and its neighbouring districts of Thane, Palghar and Raigad. (Representational Image) Light rainfall in sporadic spells is likely on Monday, while chances of heavy rainfall during the Ganesh festival seems slim as the low-pressure that had developed over the Konkan belt of Maharashtra has moved away, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
Last week, the IMD had said that between September 14 and 15, a low pressure may develop over Mumbai, which may lead to heavy rain in the coming week.
The IMD, in its five-day forecast, had also issued a yellow alert for Mumbai, and its neighbouring districts of Thane, Palghar and Raigad.
While the yellow alert has been downgraded for Mumbai, the IMD said chances of heavy rain are likely in Raigad, Thane and Palghar in the next 24 hours. “Initially, we had given a yellow alert since there was a possibility of rains owing to a low pressure. However, the pressure has started receding and we downgraded the warning as the chance of very heavy rains appear slim now. Mumbai may record light rain in sporadic spells,” Sushma Nair, scientist from IMD Mumbai, told Express on Sunday.
According to IMD data, the Santacruz and Colaba weather stations recorded 2mm rain in the past 24 hours.
Meanwhile, the water stock in all the seven lakes that supply water to Mumbai stood at 97 per cent on Sunday. While the Tulsi and Vehar lakes stand at full capacity, Tansa lake is 99 per cent full, Bhatsa 98 per cent, Middle Vaitarna 97 per cent, Modak Sagar is 96 per cent full while the water stock in Upper Vaitarna stands at 91per cent.
