NCERT school survey: Maharashtra students perform above national average, state govt schools outperform private schools at foundation stage

Students from Maharashtra performed above the national average in Class 3, 6 and 9, according to NCERT PARAKH’s Rashtriya Sarvekshan 2024 survey findings released on Monday. The survey was conducted across 4,314 schools in the state covering 13,930 teachers and 1,23,659 students from Class 3, 6 and 9. The survey recorded students’ competencies in various subjects across the three grades.

In the Foundation stage (Class 3), students from state government schools outperformed students from other schools in both language and mathematics. However, the trend reversed in the Preparatory (Class 6) and Middle stages (Class 9) as central government schools took the top spot and state government schools stood last in almost all competencies surveyed.

Foundation stage

In language competencies, Maharashtra students recorded an overall performance of 69 per cent, beating the national average of 64 per cent. Similarly in mathematics, Maharashtra students recorded an overall performance of 66 per cent and beat the national average of 60 per cent.

Rural areas in Maharashtra performed better than urban areas in both language (71 per cent vs 68 per cent) and mathematics (66 per cent vs 62 per cent). Comparing schools by management, state government schools took the top spot, followed by government aided, private recognised, and central government schools.

Preparatory stage

In this stage, competencies in ‘The World Around Us’ were also measured along with language and mathematics. Maharashtra students recorded a performance of 62 per cent as compared to the national average of 57 per cent in language competencies. In mathematics competencies, Maharashtra recorded a performance of 51 per cent against the national average of 46 per cent. In ‘The World Around Us’, Maharashtra recorded a performance of 55 per cent against the national average of 49 per cent.

Urban students performed better in language competencies than rural students (63 per cent vs 61 per cent). However, rural students performed better in mathematics competencies (52 per cent vs 50 per cent). Urban and rural students both recorded a performance of 55 per cent in ‘The World Around Us’.

Comparing schools by management, central government school students performed the best followed by private recognised, government aided, and state government schools, in all three subjects. However in mathematics, state government schools ranked third and government aided ranked last.

Middle stage

In middle stage, competencies were measured in language, mathematics, science, and social science. For language, Maharashtra recorded a performance of 59 per cent with the national average being 54 per cent. In mathematics, Maharashtra recorded a performance of 38 per cent with the national average being 37 per cent. In science, the state recorded a performance of 42 per cent compared to the country’s 40 per cent while in social science the state’s performance stood at 43 per cent compared to the national average of 40 per cent.

Students from urban areas performed better than students in rural areas in language (60 per cent vs 56 per cent) and science (42 per cent vs 41 per cent). However, students from rural and urban areas had the same score in mathematics (38 per cent) and social science (43 per cent).

Comparing schools by management, the trend seen in the preparatory stage was followed in the middle stage as well. Central government schools had the best performance followed by private recognised, government aided, and state government schools.
